POINT MEMBERS' MEMO - 7-8-08

Greetings!

We want to give some updates on “old business”, notes on upcoming summer events, and the news on the POINT program for the coming year.

POINT IN REVIEW

We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all those who helped make the POINT Family Picnic a great success!  Great food and great fun.  (Mrs. Sanders needed a while to recover, though, after being “It” in a game of tag with a band of students for an hour!)  Congratulations to Rachel Jackson and Rebekah Sanders who, together, won the Dessert Contest and will enjoy a gift certificate to Graeter’s Ice Cream.  (And thanks to all those judges who selflessly tasted and scored the desserts.  It’s a tough job, but someone had to do it!) And we’d like to say a special thank-you to the McJilton family and their team of helpers for all the work and preparation.  It was a great time together!

YEARBOOK

We would like to complete the yearbook as soon as possible.  Any students from yearbook class who’d like information on the upcoming work session, please email Mrs. Sanders at Director@POINT-homeschool.org.  Thank you!

TEST RESULTS

There are some test results that have not been picked up yet.  Please contact Sandy at teachers@POINT-homeschool.org for information on collecting results.

SUMMER

We will update the calendar on the POINT website as events are planned.  The next event open to the whole group will be our Curriculum Fair/Share on July 24th.  A memo will be mailed out soon with details.  This will be an informal, relaxed opportunity to sell or donate the material you are no longer using, or to purchase used material for the upcoming year.  We will also have our own Carla McJilton, who represents Bob Jones, and can give free shipping on all orders through her.  There will be workshops held.  It would be helpful to us to know how many will attend, so we can plan accordingly.  No registration is required if you are just attending, but it would be helpful if you would send us an email if you think you will attend.  We do need to know, however, if you plan to set up a table for used curriculum.  We have also had some ask about selling/swapping/donating gently-used clothes, toys, children's games and books, etc.  You are welcome to do that if you'd like.  Just let us know ahead of time, and remember that you would be responsible for setting up your table (no cost if only donating), and for removing any items that remain at the end of the event.  This could be a great opportunity to bless others while creating a little extra space for yourself at home!

The Senior High class will have their semi-formal dinner soon (we still need one more Sr. High student and/or parent to help coordinate this event).

The annual Jr. High pizza party date has been posted on the website as well.

The Family Wiffle Ball event has been moved to August.  The date will be posted soon.  We look forward to enjoying some more summer fun with our families!

If you have summer events offered through your church or your community that you think others may be interested in, feel free to submit those to the website.

POINT NEWS

After a great deal of continued prayer and deliberation, more decisions have been made in regard to the POINT ministry.  We are excited about what we see God doing, and although change is never easy, we are happy to move as God directs.  Thank you for your continued prayers, encouragement, and patience throughout this time of transition.  We know it has not been a quick process, but we wanted to be sure we didn't try to run ahead of God's leading, or give half-baked, unreliable information before things were made certain.  We trust you respect the need to proceed in this careful manner, even though it has required patience on your part and a great investment of time and effort on the part of leadership.  Finding God's "best" is always worth it, whatever the cost.

A letter providing more details in regard to this coming year will be posted soon.  But in an effort to get information out once it was determined, so that families may plan for the fall, we wanted to give a thumbnail sketch of the decisions that have now been made for POINT.  We have already shared with you what support efforts POINT will continue to provide to our members.  Additionally, in regard to fall classes, we now have information to communicate.  In brief, barring any unforeseen circumstances, weekly classes will be offered at Four Corners this coming year, although the POINT ministry will not be directly offering them.  They will be conducted as a ministry of Four Corners Church, supported by POINT, and Angie Slifer - a POINT member since its inception ten years ago - will be coordinating this effort, along with the support and assistance of several other key POINT members and leaders.  The program for classes will be in line with what we have had in the past.  The same curriculum, lesson plans, equipment, material, etc., will still be available to be used for the classes.  Many of the same teachers and leaders will be returning this fall.  While there will be some changes (as there have been, to some degree, every year), much will stay the same.  This weekly-classes program will be a true co-op, so while parents may need to pitch in more, the cost will drop significantly.  Enrollment will begin soon, and will – as always – start with previous members first before opening up for new enrollment.  So be ready to respond quickly once that information is out, in order to reserve your spot.

Remember, even if you have already enrolled in POINT for the upcoming year, there is a separate and additional enrollment process for those wishing to attend the weekly classes program through Four Corners Church.  Naturally, there will be overlap between these two ministries.  For those families wishing to enroll in POINT, but not in weekly classes, you are still welcome to do that if you like, certainly.  (Information on what POINT enrollment would entail has been posted on the website since May 1st.)   There has been an increasing number of families contacting us in regard to this level of enrollment.  We recognize, as seasons change, so do the needs of homeschooling families.  And although this transition was not a quick one, and much prayer, time, research, and counsel was needed throughout this process, we believe God has his finger on the pulse of the homeschool community and is faithfully guiding us to minister to needs.  We are excited about the direction in which God is taking us.  And we’re thankful we have a path that will allow many goals to be accomplished.  And as always, we pray that everything we do will ultimately honor God and bring him glory!

PARENT-TO-PARENT REVIEWS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

VISION REFERRAL
Do you suspect vision problems in your child?  My child passed every eye exam she had, but she was having headaches and anxiety with reading.  After much prayer and searching, we visited Dr. Frasco at Settler's Walk Eye Care.  She actually tests the way the muscles in the eye work, and how the focus converges.  My daughter's vision problem was discovered immediately, and after two weeks of therapy, the headaches were gone.  it made such a difference in our lives, we are eager to share it with others. Dr. Frasco will do screenings at our upcoming Health Fair.
